Fraunhofer-Institut für Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung IVV

The Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV plays a leading role in applied research into securing supplies of high-quality food and sustainable, safe packaging systems. At the KIOptiPack innovation lab it applies its expertise from more than 50 years of packaging and food sciences. The interdisciplinary research team is highly skilled in developing and describing the properties of packaging, and has a strong understanding of how packaging production is processed and modeled using thermoforming, sealing and cutting methods. The project incorporates the collective Fraunhofer IVV knowledge base around characterizing and digitally describing polymeric packaging materials to predict their functions (e.g., barriers) as well as how they are manufactured and processed. These skills are brought together to use new digital tools for the targeted development of recyclable packaging concepts containing recycled materials.
